The Municipality of Ioannina has been declared in a state of emergency for civil protection, following the strong earthquake that struck the area on March 8, 2026.

The decision, valid for three months, was made after a request by the Mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Begas, to activate procedures to deal with the consequences of the earthquake.

The declaration of a state of emergency paves the way for emergency funding for the Municipality, to repair the damages. The Municipality's services continue inspections of schools, municipal buildings and infrastructure.

The Municipality of Ioannina will inform citizens of any developments, in cooperation with the competent state services and Civil Protection.
