Athens: Demolition of 70 Dilapidated Buildings Begins

The Municipality of Athens has begun the demolition of 70 dangerously dilapidated buildings in 21 areas of the city. The initiative aims to improve safety and create green spaces.

The demolitions concern the areas of: Kolonos, Kerameikos, Plaka, Patisia, Votanikos, Gazi, Rizoupoli, Koukaki, Kypseli, Metaxourgeio, Neos Kosmos, Thiseio, Lofos Skouze, Ampelokipi, Sepolia, Rouf, Gyzi, Pagrati, Exarcheia, Polygono and Larissis Station. The buildings have not been designated as listed by the Ministry of Culture.

The project budget amounts to 4 million euros and comes from municipal funds. Demolitions are carried out carefully, taking into account local conditions.

The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated that the initiative aims to create a safer daily life for citizens. The Deputy Mayor of Infrastructure, Andreas Grammatikogiannis, mentioned that the request for demolitions had been pending for 45 years.
