Athens: Tree Fall Injures Two - Allegations of Negligence Against Municipality

Two people were injured in Agias Irinis Square in central Athens after a tree fell. According to an eyewitness, the tree was rotten, and the Municipality had been informed of its condition.
The witness, an employee of a restaurant, reported that two large branches fell from the tree. A similar incident had occurred three weeks prior, without intervention from the Municipality of Athens.
"As I was taking an order, I heard a sound, and the tree fell on the umbrella... Five minutes later, another branch fell and hit two people," the witness stated. "We had informed the Municipality that the tree was rotten, but they did not take responsibility."
For his part, the responsible Deputy Mayor stated that the tree had been inspected and was healthy, and that the fall was due to strong winds.
