Pollution Concerns in Patmos: Brown Water and Wastewater Treatment Issues

Significant concerns are rising in Patmos regarding water quality, with residents reporting brown water coming from their taps. The issue is concentrated in the western part of the island, where the wastewater treatment plant is only partially operational, leading to the discharge of sewage into the sea.
The Mayor of Patmos, Nikitas Tsampalakis, acknowledged the problem, attributing it to the island's old water supply network, which requires immediate upgrading. Meanwhile, residents complain that the problem is chronic and affects areas such as Kampos, Groikos, and Skala.
According to the local media outlet "Patmiaka Chronika," the wastewater treatment plant is barely functioning, and the Municipality has allegedly failed to find a solution. Legal proceedings have also been initiated following citizen complaints and an inspection by the Coast Guard.
Residents and business owners are awaiting the findings of the European Union delegation that visited the island for inspections, which have been pending for three years.
