The Expla-in Project: Where is Rainwater Lost in Greece?

Despite a hydrologically favorable year, rainwater continues to be lost in Greece. Hydrogeologist Konstantinos Voudouris explains to in.gr how inadequate infrastructure and poor planning lead to water scarcity and floods.
According to Mr. Voudouris, this year's rainfall increased reservoir reserves, but not as much as expected. Indicatively, on 26/3/2026, the water reserves of Athens' reservoirs were 720,000,000 cubic meters of water, compared to 650,000,000 last year.
Key reasons for water loss include changes in rainfall patterns, aggressive urbanization, aging stormwater networks, and a lack of mountain hydrology projects. Mr. Voudouris emphasizes the need for small and medium-sized dams, as well as cross-border cooperation.
He also points out that many projects have been announced but not completed, such as the Asopos dam in Corinth. He also suggests sustainable solutions, such as collecting rainwater in underground tanks for irrigation.
