The rise in marine fuel prices, due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, is putting pressure on ferry ticket prices in Greece. According to market analysts, ferry companies are burdened with 14 million euros per month, assuming the price of a barrel remains around $92-93.

The government and the Ministry of Shipping are in discussions with ferry companies to find solutions, such as reducing port fees and utilizing European funds, in order to prevent the cost from being passed on to passengers. Indicatively, Marine Gas Oil (MGO) fuel in Piraeus recorded a significant price increase compared to the end of 2025.

According to a market executive, on 31/12/2025, MGO fuel cost €528 per metric ton, on February 27 it cost €629, and on March 9 it cost €959, marking a 50% increase. The rise in fuel costs adds to the increased environmental obligations of companies, squeezing profit margins.

The increases concern not only passengers but also the transport of freight vehicles, affecting the islands' supply chain and potentially the prices of goods. The duration of the energy crisis will determine the final outcome.
