Chios: Serious Incident Between Coast Guard and Smugglers – Deaths and Injuries

A serious incident occurred in Chios between a patrol boat of the Coast Guard and migrant smugglers. According to initial reports, the incident resulted in the death of 5-7 migrants and injuries to several others.

The incident occurred when the Coast Guard vessel spotted a boat carrying migrants near the coast of Chios. The smugglers, in an attempt to avoid arrest, maneuvered, resulting in a collision with the Coast Guard vessel in the Myrsinidi area.

A search and rescue operation is underway in the area, with the participation of a Super Puma helicopter of the Air Force. Coast Guard vessels are transporting injured people to the port of Chios, where ambulances of EKAV are transferring them to the Skylitseio Hospital of Chios.

Among the injured are two coast guards, a man and a woman, whose health condition is not worrying. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
