Volos: Parents install panic button due to threats from their son

A couple in Volos, Greece, were forced to install a panic button application on their mobile phones after threats from their 38-year-old son. According to the complaint, their son threatened to set their house on fire if they did not give him money to buy drugs.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the 38-year-old persistently demanded money from his 60-year-old mother. When she refused, the man allegedly became enraged, shouted, insulted her, and threw a cordless phone on the ground, causing damage. He then threatened to set the house on fire, causing fear to his parents.
After the 38-year-old left, the parents reported the incident to the police. The police suggested accommodation in a shelter or returning home with a police escort, but the parents refused and agreed to install the panic button application. When the 38-year-old returned home, he was arrested.
According to thenewspaper.gr, the parents testified in court that their son exhibits outbursts of anger when he is in withdrawal. The defendant claimed that he simply asked for money and that he is a chronic user trying to detox. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to 15 months in prison, commutable to 10 euros per day, suspended pending appeal.
