Four climbers lost their lives in the Vardousia Mountains after being swept away by an avalanche. According to the president of the Athanasios Diakos community, Kostas Mastrokostopoulos, the climbers may have triggered the avalanche themselves, as the weather conditions were good.

As Mr. Mastrokostopoulos stated, the accident occurred near the Korakas peak (2495m), at an altitude of 2200m. "One of the possible scenarios is that the children themselves inadvertently created the avalanche by passing through that specific point," he said.

Mr. Mastrokostopoulos explained that the avalanche was probably created due to fresh snow on frozen ground. In addition, he mentioned that the climbers chose a "wrong" path. The bodies of the climbers were found and, according to the forensic examination, their death was caused by asphyxiation.
