Tragedy in Vardousia: Autopsy of the climbers' bodies today

The autopsy of the bodies of the four climbers who lost their lives in the Vardousia Mountains on Christmas Day is expected to take place today. The bodies have been transferred to the Athens Forensic Service from the General Hospital of Amfissa.
The retrieval operation, according to ERT, was extremely difficult, as it took place at an altitude of over 2,000 meters and was completed on Saturday night. Vardousia is considered a dangerous mountain in the winter months due to the steep terrain and unstable snow.
The climbers were aiming for the Korakas peak but reportedly chose a more difficult path. They were found shortly before the summit, embraced, suggesting that the avalanche fell suddenly.
The transfer of the bodies was carried out by a Super Puma helicopter of the Air Force due to the difficulty of access. EMAK forces from Lamia, Larissa and Patras participated in the operation.
The commander of the 7th EMAK, Dimitris Zachos, stated that the operation was demanding due to the difficult conditions. The Fire Department was notified of the disappearance of the climbers on December 26.
