The president of the Fire Service Officers, Kostas Tsigas, described the extreme conditions faced by firefighters in Eastern Attica, where a fire broke out on Friday (8/8). The fire claimed the life of an elderly man.

Speaking to ERTNews, Mr. Tsigas emphasized that strong winds hampered the extinguishing efforts, constantly creating new outbreaks at distances of 100 to 500 meters. Ground and air forces, along with forest commandos, foot patrols, local government machinery, armed forces, police, and volunteers, fought to contain the fronts.

Water drops from the air began at 6:30 in the morning, with coordination from the operations center for the effective use of available resources.

Mr. Tsigas conveyed the impression of his colleagues who were monitoring the situation from drones, emphasizing the unprecedented dynamics and speed of the fire's spread.
