A total of 2,716 transplants have been performed at Hippokratio General Hospital of Thessaloniki in the last 45 years, according to the director of the Surgical Transplantation Clinic, Georgios Tsoulfas.

The first adult kidney transplant took place on June 2, 1980, and the first pediatric one on October 8, 1980. On May 30, 1990, the first liver transplant was performed on an adult, and on July 1, 2022, on a child.

Of the total transplants, 747 were liver transplants, 1,092 were deceased donor kidney transplants, 859 were living donor kidney transplants, 6 were combined liver-kidney transplants, and 12 were combined kidney-pancreas transplants.

In 2024, 102 transplants were performed, and in 2025 so far, 54.

Mr. Tsoulfas mentioned the increase in organ donors, waiting lists, and shortages of anesthesiologists.

According to Mr. Tsoulfas, the waiting time for a liver transplant is shorter than that for a kidney transplant, which can reach 8-10 years.
