Greek Police Investigate Moldovan Oligarch's Ties to Russian Mafia

The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) is investigating potential links between Moldovan oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, recently arrested, and members of the Russian mafia in Greece. The investigation focuses on a suspicious trip to Dubai and possible connections to individuals involved in cigarette smuggling and money laundering.
Authorities are examining whether Plahotniuc, who faces charges of embezzling one billion dollars, had meetings with leading figures of the Russian mafia in Dubai. His sudden decision to travel to Dubai and the purpose of this trip are also under investigation.
Plahotniuc fled Moldova in 2019 and is subject to an Interpol red notice for his arrest. In addition to Moldova, Russia is also seeking his extradition on charges related to a plot to assassinate a political opponent.
