The trial begins in Chania for the case of importing and trading weapons and ammunition in Crete, which was revealed in September 2019 by the Hellenic Police (ELAS). 13 defendants are in the dock.

The case concerns the import of 120,000 Kalashnikov rounds and weapons from Albania. The discovery was made when a search of a truck carrying animal feed at the port of Souda revealed hidden weapons and ammunition.

Specifically, 4 Kalashnikov-type military weapons, 6 magazines, 122,566 cartridges, 4 bolts and 2 extractors were confiscated. Searches followed in homes in Crete, Thesprotia and Kozani.

According to ELAS, since November 2018, the group had carried out four imports of ammunition from Albania. The transport was carried out by truck and escort vehicle, while the receipt took place from Albania or from hideouts in Epirus and Western Macedonia.
