Trump Seeks to Boost Glyphosate Production in the US
Share on:

Donald Trump signed an executive order to support the production of glyphosate in the United States, citing the need for food security.

This move comes despite concerns about the potential carcinogenic properties of the herbicide. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does not consider glyphosate to be carcinogenic, unlike the World Health Organization (WHO), which classifies it as 'probably carcinogenic'.

Glyphosate-based herbicides, such as Roundup, are widely used by American farmers. Given that there is no domestic production to meet the needs, the US is forced to import the product.

Trump ordered the Department of Agriculture to take measures to facilitate the production of glyphosate and phosphorus in the US. The government believes that the threat of a production shutdown endangers national security and food security.

Bayer, which acquired Monsanto, faces numerous lawsuits regarding Roundup and is trying to resolve the legal disputes.

The regulatory framework for glyphosate remains a subject of disagreement. A scientific journal retracted a 2000 study that claimed glyphosate posed no health risks, as it was revealed that Monsanto employees had participated in its drafting.
