What Happens to Ships at Sea During a Tsunami?

Following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia and tsunami warnings across the Pacific, many are wondering what happens to ships at sea.
According to experts, tsunamis are usually harmless to ships in deep water. The waves pass beneath them without causing serious disturbances. However, when they approach the coast, they turn into dangerous bodies of water.
Captains are instructed to avoid shallow waters, ports and bays. Many cruise ships are being asked to head to depths of over 180 feet (approximately 55 meters) for safety reasons.
