UNESCO's Tsunami Programme and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) aim to enhance tsunami safety worldwide.

It collaborates with governments, warning systems, and coastal communities, coordinating information and education activities.

It relies on four Intergovernmental Coordination Groups (ICGs) to coordinate regional warning and mitigation activities, providing information to National Tsunami Warning Centers (NTWCs).

Four Tsunami Information Centers (TICs) support Member States in strengthening their capabilities, developing educational and preparedness resources.

The 151 Member States are responsible for assessing data and issuing warnings. So far, 800,000 people have participated in preparedness drills.
