Environment Council: Progress on Climate and Bioeconomy

The Environment Council, under the Cyprus Presidency, concluded in Brussels with the participation of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis. According to Mr. Vafeadis, the Council was very productive, aiming at sustainability, biodiversity protection, resilience and competitiveness.

Emphasis was placed on amending carbon dioxide emission standards for cars and vans, as well as setting the EU's 2040 climate target. There was also an exchange of views on the lessons of COP30 and strengthening communication with third countries.

Ministers approved the Council's conclusions on the EU bioeconomy strategy, aimed at promoting innovation, green jobs and economic growth.

Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra described the discussions as "very productive", while Commissioner Jessica Roswall stressed the urgent need to strengthen Europe's strategic resilience.
