Several cities in eastern Australia have been blanketed by the thickest snowfall in decades, as extreme weather events hit the region over the weekend, causing floods, vehicle abandonments, and power outages to thousands of homes, according to authorities.

Weather conditions have improved today, while yesterday, meteorologists predicted snow depths of approximately 50 centimeters in some areas, and rainfall exceeding 10 centimeters was expected for other areas, according to the New South Wales Emergency Services Agency.

Areas in the northwestern parts of the state of New England recorded the heaviest snowfall in the last 20 years, state broadcaster ABC reported, while the neighboring state of Queensland experienced its first snowfall in a decade, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
