6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Vanuatu – No Tsunami Threat

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 50 kilometers from Port-Olry, a French-speaking village on Espiritu Santo Island.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has assured that there is no tsunami threat. Angelique Frank, an employee at a tourist facility, reported that the earthquake was "very strong" and lasted almost a minute, with no damage observed.
Earthquakes are frequent in Vanuatu, an archipelago of 320,000 inhabitants located on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire." In December 2024, a strong 7.3 magnitude earthquake caused destruction and claimed the lives of 14 people.
