Palaia Fokaia Fire: Devastation and Recovery Efforts

The major fire in the Thymari settlement of Palaia Fokaia has left extensive devastation. Three homes were completely destroyed, and dozens more suffered serious material damage.
The fire started in the settlement and spread rapidly, fueled by winds of 5-6 Beaufort. Mr. Tsigas described the firefighters' battle as 'door-to-door,' with emphasis on saving homes and evacuating residents.
The fire spread towards the mountain, reaching the Charakas area. Unofficial information suggests a possible electrical problem from a DEDDIE cable as the cause.
The situation in Thymari is heartbreaking, with destroyed homes and forest. The fire was brought under control late Thursday afternoon.
The winds were constantly changing direction, making firefighting difficult. Kostas Tsigas emphasized the difficulty due to dense construction and proximity to forest areas.
The Hellenic Police assisted in the evacuation, while aerial vehicles made water drops. The fire started near a playground, and the causes are being investigated by the Directorate of Arson Crimes.
Sunday is expected to be critical, with a high risk of fires in many areas.
