Greece Advances Marine Park Plan

Environmental studies for the creation of national marine parks in Greece have been approved, according to an announcement by ΥΠΕΝ (Ministry of Environment and Energy).
The Presidential Decrees will soon be submitted for ratification to the ΣτΕ. The new parks aim to protect over 35% of Greek territorial waters, exceeding the European commitment of 30% by 2030.
Three new branches of ΟΦΥΠΕΚΑ (Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency) have been created in Milos, Amorgos, and Kythira. The Agency will be reinforced with vessels and equipment through the Recovery Fund.
The use of bottom-trawling fishing gear is prohibited in the park areas. 33 new staff positions have been secured for the management of the parks.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, stated that the government will be operationally ready for the establishment of the parks.
