Pakistan: Over 1 Million Evacuated Due to Floods
Share on:

Pakistani authorities have evacuated over 1 million people from their homes in Punjab province this week, as the worst floods in 40 years wreak havoc on hundreds of villages. Torrential monsoon rains and the release of water from India's dams caused three rivers to overflow.

More than 1,400 villages have been flooded, according to the Punjab disaster management agency. Residents of villages like Qadirabad struggled to wade through chest-deep water after the Chenab River overflowed.

The flooding was worsened by the release of water from India's dams into the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. India issued three flood warnings to Pakistan, calling them a humanitarian measure.

At least 12 people have died in Punjab province this week. The death toll in Pakistan since late June stands at 819.
