US Attempts to Block Plastic Pollution Negotiations

The US is attempting to block UN negotiations aimed at tackling plastic pollution, according to Reuters. The US delegation reportedly sent a letter to other governments, urging them not to agree to a cap on plastic production.
The letter, obtained by Reuters, reveals Washington's 'red lines,' which contradict the positions of over 100 countries supporting the imposition of limits. Reactions from oil-producing countries, such as Saudi Arabia, are creating obstacles to reaching an agreement, as plastics are produced from oil, natural gas, and coal.
The European Union and small island states insist on imposing limits on plastic production and improving the management of plastic products. The US delegation argues that it will not support 'unrealistic global approaches' such as targets for plastic production or bans on plastic additives.
Numerous studies have shown that plastics break down into microscopic pieces that are now detected in the air, water, food, and human organs, with potential impacts on human health.
