Nigeria: At Least 23 Dead Due to Floods

At least 23 people have died and thousands have been left homeless in northeastern Nigeria due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in recent days. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods have caused widespread destruction.
Dozens of people were injured in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, where several neighborhoods were flooded on Sunday. Nigerian authorities have launched search and rescue operations and have set up temporary shelters for those affected.
Heavy rainfall is common in Nigeria between June and November, often leading to deadly floods due to inadequate infrastructure. Since the beginning of this year's rainy season, more than 200 people have died, with most deaths reported in Niger State.
In 2024, more than 300 people died and over one million were displaced in 34 of the country's 36 states, making this year's rainy season one of the deadliest in decades.
