New National Marine Parks in Greece: Rules and Restrictions
Share on:

Greece is establishing two new National Marine Parks, one in the Ionian Sea and one in the Southern Cyclades, aimed at protecting marine biodiversity. The proposed regulations were presented in two Special Environmental Studies, open for public consultation.

The parks will increase the protected share of Greece’s territorial waters to 36.2%. In the Ionian Sea Marine Park, covering approximately 18,000 km², a five-kilometer exclusion zone is planned for hydrocarbon extraction. The area includes the “West Katakolo” concession area, managed by Energean.

Trawling and dredge-net fishing are banned in both parks. Traditional and small-scale coastal fishing, beekeeping, and livestock grazing are permitted. In the Ionian, aquaculture will continue under stricter regulations. Water sports and underwater photography will also be allowed, under conditions.

In the Southern Cyclades, the marine park covers nearly 9,500 km². Fishing bans are imposed around Amorgos. Maintenance of existing infrastructure, restoration of traditional landscapes, and military exercises on designated islets are permitted.
