Increased tourism to glacier regions, driven by the risk of their disappearance, is further endangering these ice masses, according to a study by the University of Lausanne. Over 14 million people visit glacier locations annually.

The research, published in Nature Climate Change, highlights the rise of 'last chance' tourism, where fascination with something disappearing degrades the ecosystem. Examples include constructing access paths and helicopter tours.

Emmanuel Salim, the study's lead author, noted that this phenomenon is prevalent in Alaska, Greenland, and Antarctica. 'Some tourists will simply move to the next popular destination once the glaciers disappear,' he added.

Researchers emphasized the need to understand public motivations and adopt responsible behaviors. They also noted the need to manage post-glacial regions, as 60% of ice volume could disappear by 2100.
