The great white shark faces a serious risk of extinction in the Mediterranean Sea, according to a new scientific study. The study, conducted by American researchers in collaboration with the Blue Marine Foundation, reveals that despite its protected status, sharks continue to be illegally fished.

Scientists estimate that at least 40 great white sharks were killed in the coastal waters of the Mediterranean in 2025. This is due to illegal fishing, inadequate protection, and pressures on local communities.
