Authorities in California are on alert due to a large wildfire burning in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. The fire, known as the Gifford Fire, has already injured three people and threatens hundreds of homes.

The fire has burned over 260 square kilometers and remains out of control, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. One driver is hospitalized with burns, while two firefighters were injured when their vehicle overturned.

The flames threaten approximately 450 buildings, and Highway 166 to the city of Santa Maria has been closed. The fire originated from at least four smaller fires along Highway 166.

More than 1,000 firefighters are trying to contain the fire, while ranchers are evacuating their herds. The causes of the fire are under investigation.
