At least 21 people have died in the Safi province of Morocco, on the Atlantic coast, due to flash floods caused by heavy rainfall on Sunday. These floods are the worst recorded in the country in the last decade.

The torrential rains, which lasted about an hour, triggered "exceptional" floods, according to authorities. Initially, 32 injuries were reported, with those injured taken to a hospital, most of whom were discharged after receiving first aid.

According to testimonies and videos circulating on social media, muddy torrents flooded the streets of Safi, sweeping away everything in their path. At least 70 homes and shops were flooded, and ten cars were swept away. Civil protection services intervened to rescue residents.

The Moroccan meteorological service had warned of heavy rains in various parts of the country. Heavy rainfall and floods are not uncommon in Morocco, despite the severe drought the country is facing.
