Mud Lake Threatens Regions in Northern Pakistan

A 7-kilometer-long lake in northern Pakistan, formed by a mountain mudslide, threatens several regions with devastating floods, officials warned.
The mudflow descended into the main channel of the Ghizer River and completely blocked it on Friday, creating the lake in the Gilgit Baltistan province, the National Disaster Management Authority said.
The blockage created a "dam-like structure" that threatens to burst causing a devastating flood, said Zakir Hussain, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority.
A total of four regions face a serious threat. The river and the Ghizer region are located north of the mountainous regions in northwestern Pakistan, where floods caused by monsoon rains this year have claimed the lives of nearly 400 people since mid-August.
