Lagouvardos: 454,000 Acres Burned in Greece, 9,000,000 in Europe

Meteorologist Kostas Lagouvardos announced via a post that as of August 19, 2025, 454,000 acres have burned in Greece. This ranks 2025 as the 5th worst year in the last 20 years.
According to the data, the 5 worst years in terms of burned areas are:
- 2007: 2,717,000 acres
- 2023: 1,747,000 acres
- 2021: 1,307,000 acres
- 2012: 524,000 acres
- 2025: 454,000 acres
At the European Union level, as of August 19, 9,000,000 acres have burned, a 20-year record. In Spain, 3,500,000 acres have burned, also the largest area in the last 20 years.
