Cyprus Ranks Third in EU for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction

Cyprus ranked third among European Union (EU) member states in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the third quarter of 2025, according to Eurostat data.
The reduction is estimated at 5.2% compared to the second quarter of 2025. At the EU level, greenhouse gas emissions increased by 1.1%, reaching 828 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
The EU's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 0.4% during the same period. The sectors with the largest increases in emissions were households (+3.6%) and manufacturing (+1.4%). A decrease was observed in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-0.8%).
Compared to the third quarter of 2024, emissions remained stable, while GDP increased by 1.6%. Overall, emissions decreased in 10 EU countries and increased in 17.
Estonia (-17.4%) and Slovenia (-5.7%) rank first and second respectively, ahead of Cyprus. Of the 10 countries that reduced emissions, only Lithuania recorded a simultaneous decrease in GDP.
