Cyprus Leads EU in Solar Water Heater Usage

Cyprus holds the first position in the European Union in the use of solar water heaters per capita, according to the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Giorgos Papanastasiou. The Minister stated that in 2023, Cyprus ranked first in the EU in installed collector surface per capita.
The contribution of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) for heating and cooling in Cyprus amounted to 42.75% in 2023, ranking the country 9th among EU member states. The Ministry of Energy has included the installation of solar water heating systems in the "Save – Upgrade" schemes and has been implementing a grant scheme since 2008 for the replacement or installation of solar systems, with grants exceeding 15 million euros.
The Ministry intends to increase the number of applications that can be submitted and reinstate the requirement for installers to be registered in the "Registry of Small-Scale RES System Installers – Category D: Solar Thermal System Installers".
The Ministry of Energy certifies training bodies and maintains a register of solar system installers, with 59 installers registered to date.
