Cyprus: Dust Hazards and Protection Measures

Successive waves of dust are affecting Cyprus, a phenomenon intensified by climate change and the increase in desert areas. The worst dust episode was recorded in September 2015.
Dr. Chrysanthos Savvidis recommends avoiding outdoor activities and using a mask. PM10 and PM2.5 particles affect air quality, with PM2.5 being more dangerous.
Dr. Haris Armeftis warns that dust contains toxic elements and metals, exacerbating air pollution. Chronic exposure to these particles is considered carcinogenic.
Protection measures: Avoid unnecessary travel, adhere to treatment for patients with chronic diseases, use a high-protection mask. A surgical mask does not provide adequate protection. Symptoms may include headache, fatigue, eye irritation, or nasal congestion.
