China: High Alert for Heavy Rainfall – Evacuations

Chinese authorities have evacuated over 82,000 citizens from Beijing due to heavy rainfall, following deadly floods last week. At least 44 people have died and 9 are missing.
The evacuations mainly took place in the Miyun, Fangshan, Mentougou and Huairou suburbs. The Beijing municipality declared the highest level of alert. Most deaths occurred in a nursing home in Miyun.
Authorities acknowledged "gaps" in preparedness. China, the country with the largest greenhouse gas emissions, aims for climate neutrality by 2060.
