Waste Disposal Control Gaps: Former Camp Turns into Dump Site

The Parliamentary Committee on Environment identified gaps in the inspection of construction waste disposal processes and the non-implementation of the relevant law. Committee Chairman Charalambos Theopemptou stated that inspections mainly occur in the morning, leading to numerous illegal disposals in the afternoon.

177 local government employees have been appointed to impose fines, but there are concerns about their effectiveness and potential bribery. Mr. Theopemptou expects an increase in the number of inspectors and changes to green spots.

DISY MP Prodromos Alambritis stated that the Government is unable to enforce the legislation and called on the Department of Environment to conduct the necessary checks. DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis stressed that there is a growing problem, with the Department of Environment having only 13 inspectors for the entire country.

Mr. Savvidis also mentioned a complaint that the old camp in Polis Chrysochous has been turned into a dump site without permission.
