Three people have died and at least 15 are missing after landslides occurred on Monday in northern Pakistan, due to heavy monsoon rains.

Local authorities report that mud and soil covered vehicles in the Gilgit-Baltistan province. Many of the victims were tourists. Rescuers recovered three bodies and rescued four injured individuals.

The landslide buried over ten vehicles, and rescue operations continued early Tuesday. Hundreds of tourists were moved to safe areas.

Heavy rains also caused damage to at least 50 houses, four bridges, a school, and a hotel, while main roads remain closed. The summer monsoons have caused 221 deaths in Pakistan since late June.

In 2022, devastating floods affected nearly one-third of the country, leaving 1,700 dead and 33 million affected. Pakistan is considered vulnerable to climate change.
