Italy to Build Floating Wind Farm in Ionian Sea, Powering 3 Million Homes

Italy is proceeding with the construction of the first floating offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Strait of Otranto. The project, developed by Messapia Floating Wind S.r.l., a subsidiary of Eni Plenitude, will consist of 73 wind turbines of 18 MW each, with a total capacity of 1.3 GW.
The wind farm will be located in a 476 square kilometer marine zone in the Ionian Sea, approximately 28 kilometers from the Italian coast and 45-50 kilometers from the Greek coasts of Epirus and Corfu. The wind turbines will be placed on floating platforms, and the energy will be transferred via underwater cables to the mainland, near Porto Badisco.
The park is expected to power 3 million households.
