Spain: Record-Breaking Wildfires in 2024

More than 3.4 million acres have been burned in Spain since the beginning of 2024, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
This number represents a record for the country, surpassing the previous high in 2022, when 3.06 million acres were burned. Portugal holds the European record since 2006, with 5.63 million acres burned in 2017.
Experts attribute the increase in fires to climate change and local factors, such as rural abandonment.
