The green sea turtle “Nausicaa” (Chelonia mydas) returned to its natural environment on Saturday, after four years of treatment and monitoring at the Cretaquarium.

The turtle was found on January 28, 2022, on the beach of Anissaras, in the Municipality of Hersonissos, weakened due to bad weather. Mr. Manos Amanakis located her and handed her over to the Cretaquarium.

During her stay, Nausicaa received intensive care and managed to recover fully. Her release took place on the beach in front of the Cretaquarium, in the presence of the public.

According to creta24.gr, Nausicaa's reintegration is part of the Aquarium's actions for 'Marine species at risk', with the support of the Region of Crete. The release of a small Caretta caretta sea turtle is expected to follow on November 9, 2025, at the same location.
