India, Pakistan: Flood Threat Rises as Monsoon Rains Intensify
Share on:

Heavy monsoon rains in India and Pakistan have increased the risk of widespread flooding, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Officials report that over half a million people have been displaced in the last 24 hours alone in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province. The total number of displaced persons has reached 1.8 million since last month, according to Nabeel Javed, Relief Commissioner of Punjab.

India issued its third flood warning this week following heavy rains and the release of water from dams. India's National Disaster Management Authority warned that the monsoon season would continue for another 24-48 hours, with potential flooding of the Indus River.

In Punjab, 3,900 villages have been flooded by the overflowing Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers. In Muzaffargarh, Narowal and Kasur, tents have been set up to accommodate the displaced.

Irfan Ali Kathia, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, said that thousands of rescuers are involved in rescue and relief operations.

The floods are the worst since 2022, when nearly 1,700 people died in Pakistan.
