Kamchatka Volcano Awakens After 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake
Share on:

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Siberia, has triggered the eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano, which had been dormant for over 500 years.

The volcano emitted an ash cloud reaching six kilometers in height. Authorities state that there is no immediate threat to populated areas. The last recorded eruption of Krasheninnikov was around 1463.

Meanwhile, another 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the Kuril Islands triggered tsunami warnings, with potential waves of up to 18 centimeters. Residents were urged to move away from coastal areas.

Experts suggest that both events may be linked to the 8.8 magnitude earthquake last week, which triggered tsunami warnings across areas of the Pacific Ocean.

Russian experts had warned of possible aftershocks for weeks following the initial earthquake.
