Dust Episodes in Cyprus: Limit Exceedances and Solutions
Share on:

Cyprus frequently faces dust episodes, leading to exceedances of European limits for PM10. Cyprus Times spoke with Chrysanthos Savvidis, Head of the Air Quality Branch, who explained that Cyprus' geographical location makes it vulnerable to such phenomena.

According to data for the period 2015-2024, exceedances of daily PM10 limits (>50μg/m3) are frequent. European legislation allows 35 days of exceedance per year, but Cyprus exceeds this number. However, there is a provision for exemption when exceedances are due to natural sources, which Cyprus proves scientifically.

Mr. Savvidis noted that anthropogenic activities, such as car traffic and the operation of industries, also contribute to air pollution. Measures are proposed such as encouraging the use of bicycles, changing the vehicle fleet to hybrid and electric, and introducing natural gas to power plants.

Despite increased awareness and sensitivity, many do not take the health effects of dust episodes seriously.

Official data:

  • Daily concentrations of PM10 & PM2.5 (2015-2024)
  • Number of days with exceedances of PM10 limits per year
  • Highest hourly and daily PM10 value (2015-2024)
