The Parliamentary Environment Committee has identified gaps in the inspection of construction waste disposal processes and a lack of implementation of the relevant law. Committee Chairman Charalambos Theopemptou stated that inspections mainly take place in the morning, leaving the afternoon hours uncovered, when many illegal disposals occur.

Mr. Theopemptou mentioned that 177 local government employees have been appointed as inspectors with the authority to impose fines. However, he expressed concerns about the potential for bribery of these employees.

DISY MP Prodromos Alambritis stated that the Government is unable to implement the legislation and called on the Department of Environment to intensify inspections. DIKO MP Chrysanthos Savvidis stressed that the problem is growing and that there is a lack of control, with only 13 inspectors for the whole of Cyprus.

Mr. Savvidis also mentioned a complaint about the conversion of the old military camp in Polis Chrysochous into a waste disposal site without a permit.
