Controlling Uncontrolled Waste Disposal in Cyprus

Recent fires in the Lemesos and Paphos regions have highlighted the problem of uncontrolled waste disposal in Cyprus. According to reports, many fires started in areas with uncontrolled garbage, increasing the risk of ignition.
The Department of Environment has mapped over 600 potential disposal sites using GIS software and satellite imagery. The data has been sent to the Associations of Municipalities and Communities for action and financial support.
Uncontrolled Waste Disposal Sites (UWDAs) pose a risk of fires and pollution. The Ministry of Interior has allocated €1 million for 16 Community Clusters to remove waste.
In response, the Department of Environment continues the #WasteFreeCyprus campaign. In 2024, 106 Local Authorities cleaned 269 sites, removing 21,500 cubic meters of waste. In 2025, 300 new cleaning sites have been approved with financial support of over €1,473,000.
Over 15 volunteer organizations are participating in cleaning activities, while the Department of Environment provides materials. UWDAs contribute to pollution and the release of toxic gases, causing risks to public health.
