Widespread Illegal Dumping Sites Plague Cyprus

The problem of illegal dumping sites in Cyprus remains extensive and difficult to solve, causing concern for both public health and the environment, according to Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou.
Ms. Theodosiou stated that efforts to address the issue are insufficient and require cooperation from citizens, local authorities, and the state. She emphasized the need for proper waste management to avoid uncontrolled disposal and the creation of fire hazards.
The situation is chronic, causing pollution, odor, and aesthetic degradation, leading to complaints. She mentioned a campaign by the Department of Environment to remove materials, but the situation remains difficult.
She visited the Municipality of Kourion, where she found extensive illegal dumping of inert materials and garbage, accumulated for a decade. Even the legal landfill of Vati faces problems and restoration is planned.
Ms. Theodosiou's office is undertaking awareness actions and cooperating with the Department of Environment. She referred to the 1st Sustainability Festival of the Pedieos River and the need for a systematic approach to the problem, which extends to the coastal zones of the Mediterranean.
