The epicenter was located near San Marcos, in the state of Guerrero, about 400 kilometers from the capital. The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the focal depth at 35 kilometers.

President Claudia Sheinbaum interrupted her daily press conference. Initially, no serious damage was reported in the capital or in the state of Guerrero. However, authorities later reported one death in the capital and 12 injuries. In San Marcos, one person died when their house collapsed.
