The Department of Environment is proposing to the Public Works Department a trial return of pebbles to Pervolia beach, near the lighthouse, to combat erosion.

Neoklis Antoniou, Environment Officer, stated that the removal of pebbles was done to make the beach appear more attractive, but in reality, the pebbles provide natural protection against erosion.

According to Mr. Antoniou, a meeting was held with the District Officer of Larnaca and the Public Works Department, where it was decided to stop the practice of removing pebbles. The pebbles that were removed were piled up at the back of the beach.

The Public Works Department is considering the proposal to reposition the pebbles as a nature-based solution. Previously, it had proposed the construction of breakwaters, but a study showed that this would affect protected areas.

The Department of Environment is also proposing to the District Officer of Larnaca to enforce legislation to stop the removal of pebbles from the beach and to consider their repositioning.
