Denmark: Zoo Asks for Animals to Feed Carnivores
Share on:

A zoo in Denmark, Aalborg Zoo, is asking citizens to donate healthy, unwanted pets, such as rabbits and horses, to use as food for its carnivorous animals. The zoo states that the animals will be euthanized by trained personnel.

According to the zoo, this practice mimics the "natural food chain" and is an important part of the diet of carnivores, such as the Eurasian lynx, lions, and tigers. The zoo's deputy director, Pia Nielsen, stated that providing food with fur and bones is important for a natural diet.

The zoo's appeal has provoked mixed reactions, with some criticizing it and others supporting it. Animal donations are accepted on weekdays, with restrictions on the number of animals per donation.
